Drumming Fire

Crackling Sizzling Textures

Atom Hubs ambition with Drumming Fire was to create a library that could be used to create extraordinary percussion and textures.. Using recordings from a crackling open fire from 4 different angles and distances along with associated metallic clangs and hits Atom Hub succeeded in making a truly unique Kontakt library.

The resulting library is unusual and contains a collection of pre-configured patches that can be used to add distinctive character to your productions Containing sounds of fire, burning, crackling wood, iron banisters, barbecue tools (a shovel, a broach) and chunks of wood this library offer a rich collection of textures and sounds.

Drunkeytar

Unusual Guitar Instrument

One day I took my acoustic guitar with me for a regular visit to my cottage. Also a microphone and a bottle of beer. After I picked some apples, I have made a fire and heated up, had a beer and recorded some guitar sounds together with sounds from a burning fireplace. My intention was not to record "great" guitar sound. I was hoping to make some strange, kind of unusual ethno stringed instrument.

Therefore, when playing, I used nervous vibrato and unproper bending, together with some detuning... and the result was drunken sounding, fiery stringed experimental instrument - Drunkeytar. Sounds of a burning wood gave it calming, meditative atmosphere.

The Bell From Shelf

Bell Tones and Sound Design

I found this thing on a shelf obviously :-). We used it occasionally as Santa Claus´s bell for my little Sam, but how it got at my place... I don´t know. My girfriend said, this had something to do with my grandmother... probably she has brought it here. When I ask her, I will update this info :-).

It is maybe 0,5 Kg weighting copper (brass) bell with few holes in it and also some short wire on top - to hold it that way, or to hang it somewhere.

As I said, I had this thing on a shelf for a long time, but just recently I realized, that it has sound that could be used somehow. I sampled it, knocking on it, ringing and tolling with it holding it hanging on its short oxidized wire.

Cottage

Atom Hub Sound Design Library

This time I came back with few ideas and also with two microphones to record sounds, which I left unnoticed when recording Cottage for the first time. I stayed in a close surroundings of Cottage itself, did not taking trips to the neighbourhood :) I also wanted to put together a more balanced collection - louder as well as quieter sounds maintaining the atmosphere of this place.

So, again, you will find some nice metal sounds, like big metal hatch, or distributing box hit with a chunk of wood, or more unusual sounds, like apples falling to the grass. Some of the sounds were recorded stereo - for example, I sat on the floor and hit the stone floor around me and mics with the palms of my hands. Or I had stood in front of a pile of chopped wood, hitting it with a chunk, from left to right.

Nice addition to these sounds is old metal bath-tub and water clunks recorded in it.

Cellar

Sounds from the Cellar

Cellar is magical place ! For a recording session I had chosen my own, in our block of flats. Walking downstairs, my intention was to record everything, that got into my hands and to catch a true sonic portrait of the place. After doors closed behind me, I noticed coaches, bicycles and some plastic toys on wheels parking there in the darkness.

Right next to them, there was iron grillage protecting heater core and down, under my feet, heavy wobbling iron hatch. I recorded everything. Then I backed down to bicycles to catch sounds of spinning pedals, spokes and a carrier. Then there was an old refridgerator standing alone in the corridor, pieces of polystyrene, a traverse rod, plastic wheeled chair...

Other interesting sounds were found after unlocking the padlock hanging on nearby door. Old, unused, detuned mandolin hanging on the wall, lots of forgotten things on shelves... I grabbed them, hit them, shuffled them... and of course, recorded them. Enjoy :-)

Workshop

Metal Found Sound

An underground room, maybe 6x4 m big, with massive steel racks on its sides full of different stuff - various tools, devices, equipment,
components. Cardboard boxes, metal plates leftovers, wires of all kinds and lenghts, plastic buckets, bottles with chemicals, cans with colors,
binders, clobbers, bags, covers... A lot of larger and smaller objects - from a long steel ladder to small tiny srews. Concrete walls and tiled
floor provide nice natural reverb and I finally got myself down here with my ZOOM H2n recorder and recorded everything and anything that
got in my sight. My strategy was to catch this place truly and naturally, so I put the mics in surround mode to the center of the room.
Bangs, strokes, rustles, noises, slithers came from all directions for the next almost an hour. When I had circled the room few times, I took the microphone closer to the shelves and recorded another sets with less ambience and more detail - screwdrivers, spanners, boxes with screws, shims, matrixes and also an orchestra of binder, defroster cans...
In contrary to my earlier "Toolshed", which offered similar kind of sounds, but of old, rusty, aged, obscure character recorded in a wooden booth, "Workshop" provides "present" sounds - it feels more industrial with a coldness of larger space and concrete and metal. I am sure, that few of you are able to get pretty interesting stuff out of it. In my opinion, lot of sounds from "Workshop" is so inspirational, that it is really easy to build weird, interesting rhythmic patterns with even  one of its 17 sample sets. I took my time to create dry and also wet versions of these and added some FX patches as well.
Enjoy playing the Workshop, friends !

A Day in the Park

Sound Design and Foley

It was nice august day and me and the family decided to spent this day in our town park. It is not large, but rather nice, quiet place to be, to take a walk. Particularly the section with the little lake and mini zoo. I did not forget to take my portable recorder of course... I had no exact plan what to record, just decided to keep it handy and ready if interesting situation occurs. And it occured... Right next to an entrance I found myself jumping and knocking on interestingly sounding iron stairway (leading to a restaurant).
After I stumbled upon a pile of gravel and pebbles and when I finally sighted homesters, I fell behind again, standing in front of an old rusty, chain-locked iron gate to an abandoned chapel. And so on and on... I played for a while on small garbage bins, benches and small wooden bridge, on the oaks and beeches around, stayed by the little creek for a moment and recorded everything... Sun was shining, covering our faces with soft, warming glare and we all
had such a nice time, such a great day... in the park.

Xylophone

Toy Xylophone

This is the toy xylophone, which I bought for my son. I regreted that later though (not because of its price - it was cheap), but I did not check properly its tuning, thinking to myself, that it did not matter. But when it came to  playing it for some time, I found it annoying and just unnatural, to listen to not fairly crafted instrument. But to just have fun beating it... it did the job in the hands of my son well :-). Anyway, I knew, that I wanted to record its sounds and tune them properly, but not just that. It had only 7 basic tones, so I added semitones too.
When the instrument was sampled, the creative journey only began. There are not many patches here, but all of them are useful in my opinion. One more thing - I recorded every note 10 times, using original wooden stick, that came with it. I don´t know why so many, but it surely helped to a natural feel, when playing this Xylophone.

Snow and Ice

Nature Sounds and Effects

I love winter. Especially the ones with snow. And I always loved how it sounded. So during one of my regular winter visits of my faithfull cottage companion Steve the cat, I took my mic to record some sonic information about this season. While Steve was chewing his lunch inside, I was playing outside with snow and ice.
Then I went to record nice and calming forest creek flowing around. Natural sounds are the most beautiful and maybe they will fit well into some of my (your) icy compositions.

Mechaniano

Pianos, Synths and Metal Objects Sound Design

Acoustic tones of an old piano mangled together with synth samples and metal objects sampled outside in a town park. The result is a nice little instrument capable of melancholic, deteriorated sounds reminding untuned piano, marimba, metalophone, or music box. Mechaniano comes handy anytime you need something imperfect, rusty sounding and of a piano nature. Regards to all the steam punk lovers!
